Schneide mich schön. Der geborgte Songtitel slice me nice aus den 80er Jahren lässt die Wassermelone in ein bestimmtes Licht rücken, alle weiteren Sujets dieser Bilderserie ebenfalls.

Ein besonderes Augenmerk wird in der aktuellen Arbeit auf die Inszenierung eines semantischen Netzes und die Möglichkeit eines Subtextes gelegt. Der gewählte Titel erschafft künstliche Räume zwischen den Bildern. Statt die „natürliche“ Narration der einzelnen Bilder, deren ursprüngliche Umgebungen nicht unterschiedlicher sein könnten, zu unterstützen, wird eine neue konstruiert.

Das Künstlerpaar Gilbert & George, welches auf dem letzten Bild posiert, hat bereits vor dem Erhalt des Turner Preises sowohl Nachnamen als auch Individualität abgelegt, um als ein Kunstwerk und als ein Ganzes zu existieren. Im Kontext der Serie slice me nice behalten sie ihre grauen massgeschneiderten Anzüge zwar an, doch mindestens zwei neue Identitäten sind ihnen gewiss, zumindest in den Köpfen des Publikums.

This song title, borrowed from the 1980s, puts the watermelon in a quite specific light, along with all the other subjects in this series of photographs.

In this work, particular attention is paid to staging a semantic network and to the possibility of a subtext. The chosen title creates artificial spaces between the pictures. Instead of a “natural” narration of the individual pictures – whose original surroundings could not be more different – a new narration is constructed.

Even before being awarded the Turner Prize, the artistic duo Gilbert & George, who here pose for the last picture, had already put aside both their surnames and their individuality in order to exist as a work of art and as a whole. In the context of the slice me nice series, they keep on their grey, tailor-made suits, but they are at least certain of two new identities, in the minds of their public at any rate.
