These photos were taken during my voyage on the CMA CGM cargo ship. My journey ended in Newark, in the port where, 60 years ago, the era of the container was born. The container invention has revolutionized the sea freight transport industry, becoming the driving power of the international trade, contributing strongly to the social-economic development of the second globalization, whose negative effects at planetary level are the environmental degradation, the social inequality, the poverty increasing and the loss of local identities.
Shipping is also by far the biggest transport polluter in the world. The Guardian has reported a new research showing that in one year, a single container ship can emit cancer and asthma-causing pollutants equivalent to that of 50 million cars.
The fuel used in ships is waste oil, basically what is left over after the crude oil refining process. It's the cheapest and most polluting fuel available, burning turns into sulfur and paints the sky yellow.
